It's Fiesta Time
We’ve all celebrated Cinco de Mayo before. Many of us with the necessary Coronas, Margaritas, and Guac. BUT do you know why we celebrate on the 5th of May?
Contrary to the common misunderstanding, it’s not Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September, btw). We celebrate Cinco de Mayo to commemorate the victory of the Mexicans over France at the Battle of Puebla, and oddly enough, it’s celebrated more widely in the US than in Mexico.
These days, we mostly observe Cinco de Mayo to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, which is pretty darn awesome! Just think about how many foods and traditions come from Mexican cultural influences in our country.
This year while you’re imbibing, be sure to learn and appreciate something new about Mexican cultural heritage and be grateful for Mexico’s victory over Napoleon III all those years ago.
Whether you’re looking to host a celebration, or just observing, we’ve got your guide on how to go all out this Cinco de Mayo.
COMER (eat)
All the way up here in New York, the easiest way to see Mexico’s incredible influence is through our food. I mean how would we enjoy all that avo toast without avocados from Mexico?
Treat your guests to some delicious Guacamole, some Cheezy Nachos, or some Pumpkin Portobello Tacos. This food is just too colorful and delicious for plain white plates, so check out the below. PSST to celebrate we’re putting Hot Sauce on errrrything!
1. Fiesta Caliente Dinner Plates ($5.47)
2. Fiesta Lunch Napkins ($2.95)
3. Mini Straw Sombrero - for the hot sauce in yo’ bag, swag ($0.35)
4. Red Stoneware Tortilla Warmer ($28.24)
BEBER (drink)
No Cinco de Mayo party is complete without margs and cerveza. And if you’re going all out with real Mexican drinks, you need to have the matching serving vessels.
We’re partial to colorful margarita glasses rimmed with tasty Salt Rim Creations. If you’re sticking to beer, be sure to jazz it up with some decorations. Steal a sombrero from the hot sauce and grab a serape for an Insta-worthy drinking experience.
1. Señorita Needs Another Margarita Napkins ($2.95)
2. Color-Changing Plastic Margarita Glass ($2.99)
3. Serape Bottle Coozie ($3.49)
FIESTA (party)
Since you’re celebrating Mexican heritage, be sure to decorate accordingly. There’s much more than piñatas and chili peppers involved in Mexican celebrations, but be sure to include those, too.
We’re celebrating with traditional papel picado banners, hand-crafted paper flowers, along with the much less traditional but equally as fun margarita lights and confetti. Get your fiesta started with these awesome decorations.
1. Margarita String Lights ($13.00)
2. Cactus String Lights ($18.00)
3. Large Papel Picado Banner ($4.69)
4. Confetti System Gold Shaggy Piñata ($175.00)
5. Carnation Flower Swag ($5.95)
6. Chili Pepper Confetti ($2.09)
7. Fiesta Fluffy Flower Decorations ($7.99)
8. Mini Taco Piñata ($10.00)
