What a Wonderful World

On April 22nd we’re celebrating Earth Day! But let’s be real though, we celebrate Earth Day everyday. Regardless, we’re making the most of the official holiday and putting mother earth first next week.

Want to know how we’re celebrating this year? Check out some of our suggestions for making the most out of Earth Day 2016.

PARTY

Attend the Earth Day New York 2016 festival in Union Square. Connect with environmental campaigns, green brands, and awesome people. There’s music and entertainment, exhibitors, and more.

Prefer to be a little more active? Take a walk on the green side with the Earth Day 5K Green Tour. Don’t worry though, no running required. This is a walking tour exploring some of the most exciting green sites in NYC. You’ll raise money for environmental education programs as you visit the Lowline (the first underground park), 1 Hotel Central Park (a chic eco-friendly hotel), and Natural Gourmet Institute (NYC’s premiere natural food culinary school). As a bonus you’ll get a sneak peak at a new nature documentary and lunch provided from Natural Gourmet Institute.

LEARN

Spend the week learning at The New School’s Earth Week programs. The New School is championing environmental justice through everything from design and art to sustainable business practices. We’re particularly excited about the Green Jobs Panel and SURE House.

Go to the green living heaven that is the Green Festival Expo. In town at the Javits Center this weekend, they’ll also be in DC, LA, San Fran, and Portland later this year. Learn all about promoting sustainability, hear from top speakers, discover new green brands, and meet some incredible people!

VOLUNTEER

Take part in The New School’s Car-free Day Initiative. Use public transportation, bike, or walk to work on Earth Day. Don’t drive or take an Uber. We promise, you can survive one day. Then who knows, maybe you’ll continue doing it!

What better way to give back to the earth than by planting trees and other plants? Take a quick bus, train, or ferry over to Liberty State Park, and volunteer to help plant the Nature Path. You’ll be celebrating Earth Day with a great group of people, all stepping up to beautify and preserve a state park. Bonus: the awesome view of the Statue of Liberty!

New York City’s greenmarkets are seriously amazing year round, but right now is their hayday. Volunteer with GrowNYC as a Greenmarket volunteer. Use your cooking skills or chattiness for a good cause, by helping with community outreach.
